One of my very favorite quotes is by the great Milton Berle. He said, “Laughter is an instant vacation.” The first time I came across it I was floored by the simple truth of it. Wow… sometimes I take myself, my life and my worries way too seriously. I can literally think of entire days I have trudged through with no laughter. How sad is that?
What about you? Does laughter surround you every day? Or, do you go days without a really good belly laugh… the kind where you can’t even finish your sentence or the last line of the joke because you are laughing so hard? When did we grow up and get too serious for our own good?
After I read that quote, I decided I needed to laugh at least a few times a day. It can’t be that hard, right? I mean my little boy laughs all the time. I want to be more like him (minus the nose picking and booger eating he seems to be fascinated with at the moment). I wondered, “How should I go about this? Can I plan my laughter? Can I pencil it into my calendar… 10 am – morning laughter break?”
Why not?? I thought it was worth a try.
So, where does someone look for laughter? I have come to find out it can be pretty easy in this day and age. We have laughter at our fingertips. You can look up jokes to read, funny videos, hilarious movies and even pee-in-your-pants funny commercials online. There are a few things I have found that make me laugh no matter how many times I read or watch them.
Laughter is such a wonderful release and a feeling of pure happiness in that moment. Why wouldn’t we want to feel that way all the time, or at the very least, a couple of times EVERY day? Try to make those around you laugh as well. Giving someone else that joy is equally fulfilling.
Experts argue about how long it actually takes to establish a new habit. I have seen articles say 21 days and others that say it is more like 66 days. April is National Humor Month! Why not start today and see how many days it takes you to establish the habit of filling your days full of laughter. How long will it take you to get to the point of searching out the laughter without even realizing you are doing it and without having to set the reminder to go and look for a joke?
I could give you a laundry list of ways to incorporate laughter into your day. But that would be boring and has been done a million times over. I am going to give you some links to some really funny stuff, because I want to make you laugh today, right now!!
Who doesn’t like a little bodily functions humor? We have all been through it! Maybe it is because I am a nurse. We don’t have a problem talking about it anytime… anywhere. In fact, be forewarned. Nurses have no problem asking probing questions at the mere mention of a stomach ache. We will grill you on consistency, color and frequency. Giving you our solicited or unsolicited advice on what is going on down there. So, I couldn’t help but love this hilarious story. Warning! It made me laugh so hard I cried and peed a little. No joke.
Who knew a commercial could have you doubled over laughing ? I had to see this one a few times before I even knew what the commercial was selling. I was always laughing so hard I wasn’t paying attention to the end. Ladies, this one is for you. You will definitely get the movie reference. You will have to explain it to the guys!
The Ellen Show is my go-to for a good laugh. She does some super funny stuff. She scares her guests, gets celebrities to go undercover and do the silliest things and the list goes on. One of my particular favorites is her phone call to Gladys from Texas . This link is to the video of the very first call. They have had many calls since, and they are all very funny.
We can’t leave out a good comedian! One of my personal favorites is Brian Regan . He is so funny, and his routine is clean. That isn’t always easy to come by. There are a ton of good comedians out there. All you have to do is go to YouTube and search. That will definitely fill your laugh quota for the day!
I hope they made you laugh a little. Share them with someone you want to give the gift of laughter to!
