HEB Community Challenge 2015

HEB Community Challenge 2015

by Health & Wellness Team - January 01, 2015

Calling all schools, businesses, organizations, community members, and leaders: This is the third year HEB has offered the HEB Community Challenge and the second year San Angelo will participate. We felt good about last year’s 7th place finish in the Mid-sized category, but we would like to take 1st place this year. Mayor Morrison uploaded a video supporting the challenge last year encouraging the community to become involved. This year HEB would like to challenge each and every one of you to see which school, business, organization, community member, or leader will be the most involved!

The challenge will kick off January 1, 2015. This competition challenges communities across the state to compete to see which can demonstrate the greatest commitment to healthy living over a 4 month period. By posting comments and photos that reflect a healthy and active lifestyle at www.hebcommunitychallenge.com, you will earn points for your community?!

Texas’ communities are now struggling more than ever, burdened by the financial and social constraints of our unhealthy society. Employers face the challenge of supporting ever-growing healthcare costs. Schools continue to lose funding, making it difficult to foster healthy behaviors among their students and faculty. Ultimately, we all share responsibility for the fact that today’s youth are the first generation in 100 years to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. However, we know that by working together we can ease the burden and make healthy the new norm in communities throughout our great state.

As school leaders, you have firsthand knowledge of how our society’s unhealthy norms affect us all. You all see its effects on children and parents, and you are pushed to provide education to children who struggle to focus in the classroom because of improper nutrition and inadequate activity levels.

As community leaders in businesses and organizations, you have the ability to see the impact unhealthy lifestyles have on the communities you have worked so hard to preserve.

The Healthy at HEB Community Challenge presented by It’s Time Texas is designed to provide an easy and fun way to engage students, parents, and the community. So start talking to friends, family, and coworkers now about the fun and healthy activities you will do and be sure to join in the fun starting January 1, 2015!

HEB, Shannon Health and Wellness and the YMCA will host a Community Kick-Off on January 9, 2015 to officially start this year’s Challenge. The fun will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the YMCA downtown and last until 7 p.m. The Kick-Off will feature local instructors leading 15 minute exercise sessions. The public is welcome and everyone is encouraged to wear their tennis shoes and join in on the fun. HEB Community Challenge t-shirts will be handed out to the first 300 attendees, so be sure to mark your calendars.
