“Enjoy the taste of eating right” is the slogan this March for National Nutrition Month. Research suggests taste tops nutrition as the main reason why one food is purchased over another. This month, let’s focus on making informed food choices and developing healthy eating habits.
Whether it is shopping the perimeter at your local grocery store, or eating at a Healthier Choice restaurant, we have multiple choices to make.
It is important to enjoy the food we eat, but it is equally important to include nutrient-rich foods as a key component of each meal.
I am the first to admit I can be picky at times when it comes to vegetables. Anyone who knows me knows I will not eat green beans, even if you paid me. I used to swallow them whole or feed them to our dog as a child. But, I have become more “daring” to try new things and expand my vegetable horizons.
With that in mind, I have to consider nutrition and taste when it comes to making food choices. Nutrient-rich foods and drinks from the five food groups, recommended by Choose My Plate, provide health benefits that are only a few calories. Some of these foods include: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and fat-free or low-fat dairy.
For me, I like to explore healthy substitutions. I like to use plain Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. Healthy substitutions give you the ability to make a small tweak to your favorite recipe or meal to save some calories, while still enjoying the taste. This is just one of many ways that can lead to healthier eating habits.
Let’s be more informed about the food choices we make and start with making small changes to enjoy the taste of eating right!Tweet
