A 5K a Day, Keeps the Doctor Away

Medical Radiology Technologist at Shannon Medical Center, Luis Rodriguez, has worked hard to change his health habits over the past three years.

In 2010, Luis was chosen to participate in the Naturally Slim program due to his profile— waistline, high cholesterol and high triglycerides.

“Following the program, I drastically cut out my sugar,” he says. “I also started riding my bike the three miles to work each day. My wife happened to win a new bike through a Facebook giveaway, so it worked out well to replace the old one I had.”

After biking to work for a year, Luis noticed the three mile ride was equivalent to a 5K race and he ditched the bike in favor of his running shoes.

During this time, Luis went from 178 pounds to 145 pounds and has dropped four inches off of his waistline. Luis acknowledges keeping up with his routine is not easy, but credits his family and co-workers in ultrasound and nuclear medicine as being a great support system.

“I get up at 5:30 a.m. to be at work and ready by 7 a.m.,” he says. “It is a struggle every, single day, but I do it because I am living with the benefits. The biggest difference is that I am no longer taking my cholesterol medication. That has saved me at least $300 a month.”

Luis says his advice to those who think they cannot get into a fitness routine, or start healthy habits, is to not let your age get in the way.

“You can still be active no matter your age,” he says. “I’m 48. Just start small— set small goals, accomplish those and go up from there. I have also found the time when I’m running is very therapeutic. I use that time for prayer, reflection and stress relief.”
